As the first month of the new year comes to a close, it is easy to start thinking of your New Year’s resolutions as a failed attempt at a healthier life. That is, if you have already given up on cutting out junk food, working out regularly, or limiting your drinking. If you are sticking with your resolutions, keep going! Don’t give up now.
While many people have likely already given up on their resolutions, we have some news for you — it is never too late to start again! You can always jump back into your resolutions and make healthier life choices. Or better yet, don’t make resolutions!
We know what you are thinking, a gym telling you not to make resolutions seems strange. But at BodyPlex Fitness in Jasper and Woodstock, we know that most New Year’s resolutions don’t last past February. This is why we are telling you to skip the resolutions and try something else instead! If you have already failed at your resolution for 2019, don’t think of yourself as a failure, this blog will help you get back on track and allow you to make better goals that will stick.
Ditch the Resolutions
New Year’s resolutions are fun to talk about and plan during the beginning of the year, but we have noticed that it is generally all talk. People vow to quit drinking during the week only to grab a cold one after the first Monday back to work. People say that they are going to join a gym and work out multiple times a week, and many times they join the gym but never follow through with the second part. Resolutions are meant to improve our lives, but many people simply make them because it is the thing to do during the new year, not because they actually want to make that change. So, from now on, ditch the resolutions unless you truly want to improve an aspect of your life and work hard to do so.
Focus On Fitness Whenever
When it comes to fitness, you don’t have to start at the beginning of the year. There are so many reasons to join a gym and start getting active, you don’t need to wait until the beginning of the year to start. Physical activity is important for everyone to practice throughout the entire year. If you need specific reasons to hit the gym throughout the year, there are a few things you can keep in mind. These include everything from getting your dream summer body and looking great on vacation to feeling better than ever before. There is a reason to work out during every season, but once you start and make it a habit, you will notice how it makes you feel better.
Make It a Habit
You may have heard that forming a habit takes 21 days, but a more recent study found that it takes an average of 66 days to form a habit. While some people were able to form habits in as little as 18 days, others took around 245 days to form habits. While this may seem discouraging, making it a habit to work out or get some sort of physical activity every day can help you stick with it year after year. After a long day of work, it can be tempting to go home and plop down on the couch. Instead, try to get half an hour of physical activity. Head to the gym right after work so that you are not tempted to watch TV instead. If you don’t make it to the gym one day, take a walk around your neighborhood or follow a fitness video. Doing this every day will help make it a habit and allow you to stick with it for longer.
Add to Your Schedule
We understand that life can get busy and hectic, making it hard to squeeze in an hour-long workout every day. But when you intentionally make time in your busy schedule for a workout, it is easier to not skip your daily physical activity. Finding time in your busy schedule can make it more challenging to stick with your fitness goal, so instead of playing it by ear, make sure you plan a time every day to hit the gym or take a walk. Our 24-hour gyms in Jasper and Woodstock make it easier to get to the gym. Whether you schedule your workout time in the morning before taking the kids to school, after work, or late at night after the kids are in bed, a set schedule can be beneficial. It is simple to talk yourself out of a workout when you feel as though you have no time, so make time.
For Health Not Looks
Many people make fitness resolutions because they want to lose weight or achieve a certain look. This is often why people give up. It takes a while to notice the results of all the effort you are putting in. There are many factors that also play a role in when you will notice results, including diet, type of exercise, and the point you are starting from. Instead of focusing on the results, focus on the way it makes you feel. Being physically active can help you relieve stress, sleep better, feel happier, and overall boost your well being. As you work on becoming more active, be sure to focus on how you feel rather than how you look, you will notice the results much sooner!
